Facebook is combatting fake news to avoid using the social media platform as a source of misinformation

According to BBC, the new Facebook features for reporting news are being deployed now. Aside from reporting fake news, there are other features that are designed to fight the spread of wrong information.

After a surprising win of Donald Trump in the last US 2016 election, Facebook has received criticisms from some users that the fake news seen in Facebook had caused Trump to win unexpectedly. The feature added by Facebook can flag fake news and it might be able to influence the future algorithm of the social media platform.

According to Newsroom, Facebook wants to allow people have a voice and that we (company) "cannot become arbiters of truth" alone. Facebook has added an option phrased "It's a fake news story" on its feature for reporting posts. Reporting post is a feature used to report spam and annoying contents.

The new label, "disputed" stories,  are also introduced where Facebook will refer to third-party organizations for fact checking. At present, there are 43 signatories from different countries for fact-checkers.

If the stories are found to be fake after a thorough checking they will be labeled as fake news with a link for the explanation. Facebook is still exploring for other useful features in the near future.
